On this day in 1877, the Senate confirmed President Rutherford Hayes' appointment of Frederick Douglass as U.S. Marshal for D.C. The abolitionist became the first African American confirmed for a presidential appointment by the Senate, though he was criticized for not resigning because he was never asked to perform the usual duty of introducing foreign dignitaries at the White House.
